The Alabama Solution Nominated for Academy Award!

It’s official! The Alabama Solution, a documentary about the Alabama Department of Corrections, has been nominated for an Academy Award for best feature documentary film. [1] For anyone who has not yet seen it, I highly recommend it.

The film details horrific living conditions, prisoner abuse, cover-up’s, and non-solution answers to systematic problems. As Americans, we take great pride in our heritage and systems of fundamental fairness, yet many people would be shocked to learn about the horrors that happen in our prison systems.

According to World Population Review, the United States incarcerates people at a rate of 541-per-100,000. [2] In the incarceration rate, we are outclassed only by El Salvador, Cuba, Rwanda, and Turkmenistan. [3] We are number one in total prisoner population though, followed by China and Brazil. [4] Considering the horrors outlined in The Alabama Solution, we should all be concerned about the constitutional deprivations happening in our backyards.

Being imprisoned is a crushing experience. Sentences are almost always longer than necessary. The physical and mental traumas endure long after incarceration has ended. But for grace, you or I could be there today.

Per Ala. R. Prof. Conduct 7.2(b)(2), this firm does not have a physical office in Alabama. Our office is located in the Florida Panhandle. However, the fact of my office being located in the Florida Panhandle does not and will not affect or impede my ability to litigate postconviction cases and appeals. The availability of electronic filing, video hearings, and a willingness to drive to contested hearings means that my location will not get in the way of fighting for my clients.
